Composer: Composer

  • This page is a list, compiled as an index, of the individual pages of people listed as "Composer" in the Credits column on the recording pages of the Museum of Pop Music (MOPM).
  • Eligibility is limited to people who can be identified as "Composer" on the recording page and who have created their own individual page.
  • We will not post names that do not identify the person, such as "Traditional" or "Anonymous" (although they will remain on the recording page).
  • If multiple people are listed as "Composer" on the same recording, all confirmed names will be included in the listing.
  • Distinguishing between people with the same name is only possible when identifying information such as birth and death years, area of activity, etc. If identifying information cannot be confirmed, they will be treated as the same person, as there is no proof that they are different people.

What is Composer?

A composer is a person who is responsible for coming up with the melody, harmony, and structure of a piece of music, and putting it all together as a work. When a person is listed as a composer on a recording or sheet music, it means that the person is credited as the person who created the piece. If a person can be identified as a composer in the Credits column on each recording page, they will be indexed as a composer.

Differences from Arranger

An arranger is a person whose role is to adapt an existing piece of music to suit a specific arrangement (vocals, piano, wind band, orchestra, etc.) and performance style. Composer is a credit related to the "creation of the work (the song itself)," while Arranger is distinguished in that he "arranges it into a form suitable for performance and recording (including adjusting the arrangement, development, accompaniment, harmony, etc.)." When Composer and Arranger are listed together on a recording, they will be treated separately according to their roles, as it is possible that the composer of the work and the person in charge of the arrangement used in the recording are listed separately.
